Chinese New Year
Our favorite and most elaborate design yet, hands down. This super fun invitation to the Washington, DC home of Tracey and her Chinese New Year dinner party is gorgeous, certainly one-of-a-kind, and a little bit tongue-in-cheek. The square card is over two millimeters thick, and is covered front and back in actual red Chinese silk with gold and chartreuse butterflies. This party was a celebration of the Chinese year of the dog, so mounted on the front of this card is a hand-cut silhouette of Tracey's own dog... a Chinese shar pei, of course! The invitation is printed on the dog in a font resembling that which you would see on a Chinese food takeout box. Overlaying the entire card is a piece of golden vellum. This is a translucent paper that allows the lower layers to peek from behind, but it must be lifted to really read what is below. The vellum is held in place with two pewter colored metal brads and red satin ribbon, a detail intended to conjure the feel of a traditional Chinese smock. The Chinese characters that translate (roughly) to the numbers "2004" are hand drawn in black at the bottom. The masterpiece was mailed in a shimmery gold envelope, sealed with a dragonfly die cut from the red silk. Don't you LOVE it?
